Up to 5 computers can be authorized at a time. After this point, existing machines must be de-authorized to make room for new ones. iOS devices, such as iPhones and iPads, do not require authorization, as they use the iCloud partnership.

Computers must be de-authorized on iTunes before they are given away or sold. They must also be de-authorized before major hardware upgrades, which can cause iTunes to register the machine as a new device.

Make sure your Mac or PC is running the latest version of iTunes before authorizing it. You only need to authorize a computer once, however, multiple attempts will not use more space.

Still need authorization

This could happen because the content you are playing was purchased with a different Apple ID. You can try it out by right-clicking on the item in iTunes and looking for the Delete Download option.

If the Delete download option is available, you are logged into the correct account. You must click Delete Download and then download the item again. If this does not work, you can contact Apple Support for further assistance.

If the Delete download option is not available, select Get Info and click on the File tab. Here you will see the Apple ID associated with the purchase of the item. This is the account you should use when authorizing the computer.

No more authorizations available

iTunes allows you to authorize 5 computers at a time. If you cannot authorize a new machine, it means that the limit has been reached. You can see how many computers are authorized in your iTunes account and choose to deauthorize all the computers if necessary.

Too many authorized computers

Occasionally, a single computer uses multiple authorization slots. This usually happens after a major hardware upgrade because iTunes registers it as a new machine. To solve the problem, you can either deauthorize the computer several times or deauthorize all the computers at once and start from scratch.

I cannot access the authorized computer

Sometimes you cannot access a computer that is authorized for your account. This could happen if you no longer own it or if it no longer works. In such cases, the only option is to disable all computers. Then, you will need to authorize each computer you still use.
